The sermon on Sunday was about little stories.
And a big story.
And bound and lost pages.
Well, my paraphrase anyway :-)
So where do you fit? Or do you?
Basically here is the idea:
Did you realize your life is just one page in God's bigger story of time? This news might make us feel less significant, but I don't mean it that way.
There are lots of pages in the world. Some are bound and some are scattered to the wind. Those that are scattered are blown to and fro without a purpose, a binding holding them to something firm and real. Many times they become lost among the slush piles of misperceptions, selfish ambition, humanism, poor choices, broken lives, bitterness, and disappointed hopes. They drift from one hope to another trying to find something to cling to, but each "promise" still leaves their hearts uncertain and loosed from truth.
Then there is God's book. The one He's possess since before time began. In his book, each page is firmly bound by the truth of the Gospel, with the blood of Christ stamped over each one as a seal.
Mine.
These pages may flutter in the winds of change or hardship. They might rattle in the storms and doubt,b ut they never come loose from their binding. Fastened by God's hand, they remain connected to the source of who penned them.
And this knowledge gives the people bound by Christ two very important things:
1. certainty
2. purpose
When we realize we fit into God's big story, our lives are no longer aimless attempts at "finding" purpose. We have it.
As the Westminster Shorter Catechism asks: What is the chief end of man?
The answer? To glorify AND enjoy Him forever
PURPOSE
And as we study God's Word and grow to know him more, each day strengthens our certainty. His promises hold us fast, even when our hearts and minds wander. All because our stories are not based on how well we write them, but on his love binding them. Not us, but him.
May you find purpose and certainty in that page of your life fashioned by God's hand...
and enjoy Him forever.

Love this post, Pepper! Such beautiful insight!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Amy. Aren't you glad to be bound to His book? :-) I sure am!
DeleteSuch an encouraging post, Pepper -- affirming and full of hope -- and an analogy a writer would love (and does!)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Beth. It's humbling too. He's called us to be a part of HIS story...wow
DeleteI loved this image, Pepper. As I was reading it I thought, standing alone, the story of our life, written on one page, may not make sense, but when bound together with the other pages, our lives take on new meaning. We are part of the Body of Christ, a piece of the puzzle, a page in the Greatest Story ever told. I love being bound to the One who wrote the Book.
